Representatives from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and other political factions within the ruling coalition convened for a pivotal meeting chaired by President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the President’s Secretariat.
During the session, SLPP Parliamentarian S.M. Chandrasena revealed that the primary focus centered on preparations for the impending presidential election, underscoring the significance of the upcoming political event.
In light of the forthcoming election, MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena emphasized the importance of securing the SLPP's support for a presidential candidate. He disclosed that President Wickremesinghe was urged to engage in discussions with the SLPP leadership to garner their endorsement.
Abeygunawardena stressed the necessity of dialogue, asserting, "Whatever happens, discussions must be carried out." He further elaborated that the President was encouraged to initiate talks with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Basil Rajapaksa regarding potential support for the presidency.
The meeting signals a strategic effort within the ruling coalition to consolidate support and navigate the complexities of Sri Lanka's political landscape in anticipation of the upcoming presidential election.
