Sri Lanka's tourism industry has witnessed a robust start to the year, with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) reporting over 200,000 tourist arrivals in the first month.
According to official figures, a total of 201,687 tourists explored the island from January 1 to 30, with significant contributions from Indian and Russian nationals, numbering over 31,000 and 28,000, respectively.
While the majority hailed from Russia and India, SLTDA's statistics reveal a diverse mix of visitors. Germans, Americans, British, Australians, Chinese, French, Polish, and Dutch tourists were also among those who explored the unique offerings of Sri Lanka.
In 2023, the country experienced a total of 1.48 million tourist arrivals, with December witnessing the highest monthly figure at 210,352. The upward trend in tourism is underscored by the diverse international appeal of Sri Lanka's attractions.
Simultaneously, the iconic Lotus Tower, open to the public since September 2022, celebrated a milestone as it welcomed its 50,000th foreign visitor. Major General (Retd.) Prasad Samarasinghe, the Director and CEO of Colombo Lotus Tower Management Company (Pvt) Ltd., presented a special gift to commemorate the occasion to the 50,000th foreign tourist, a Bulgarian national.
