The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has revealed its intention to slash electricity tariffs by 50 percent by the end of January, aiming to counterbalance the 18 percent hike implemented in October the previous year.
CEB Media Spokesperson Noel Priyantha conveyed that this decision comes after the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) approved an 18 percent increase in electricity tariffs starting October 20, 2023.
Speaking at a media briefing, Priyantha highlighted the fluctuating nature of electricity tariffs, noting that they were raised in February, reduced in June, only to be increased again in October of the preceding year. The CEB now aspires to mitigate the impact of the October increment by lowering tariffs by a substantial 50 percent from that specific percentage.
The reduction in tariffs is currently in the discussion phase, according to the spokesperson, as the CEB explores strategies to bring relief to consumers. The proposed move is anticipated to be implemented by the end of January, offering potential relief to consumers grappling with increased electricity costs.
