In response to a significant surge in Dengue cases, the Health Ministry has announced the commencement of a special Dengue prevention week from January 7 to 13.
The initiative aims to conduct islandwide cleaning campaigns, along with awareness programs to curb the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, addressed the media, highlighting the decision to focus on 70 high-risk MOH (Medical Officer of Health) areas where abundant dengue breeding places have been identified.
The prevention campaign will be a collaborative effort involving personnel from the tri forces, police, health officials, and voluntary organizations.
Dr. Samaraweera emphasized the importance of community cooperation in ensuring the success of the campaign. He invited the public to actively participate in the efforts to eliminate dengue breeding grounds and raise awareness about preventive measures.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, 2023 witnessed a total of 88,398 Dengue cases, with the Colombo District reporting the highest number at 18,650. December alone accounted for 11,498 cases, marking the highest monthly tally for the year. Tragically, 58 individuals lost their lives to Dengue in the same period.
The special Dengue prevention week is a proactive measure by the Health Ministry to address the escalating Dengue crisis and protect communities from the potentially fatal disease.
