An inmate of the Kalutara Prison passed away while undergoing treatment at the Kalutara General Hospital in Nagoda. Prisons Commissioner and Spokesman Gamini B. Dissanayake revealed that the deceased, originally seeking treatment for a fever on Thursday (28 Dec.), was readmitted to the Nagoda Hospital after a subsequent illness.
The inmate, incarcerated on drug-related charges, ultimately succumbed to the illness. Although the cause of death is determined to be an illness, specific details are yet to be disclosed, as stated by Dissanayake. In response, all incoming inmates destined for Matara Prison will now be redirected to Angunakolapelessa Prison.
This incident follows the recent death of another Kalutara Prison inmate due to pneumonia, and the hospitalization of 17 Matara Prison inmates for meningitis, resulting in one fatality. In a separate incident in September, two Galle Prison inmates also lost their lives to meningitis, raising concerns about health conditions within the prison system.
