Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) in Colombo has observed a rise in upper respiratory infections, influenza cases, and instances of COVID and Dengue-positive patients, along with an increase in cases of diarrhoea and vomiting among children, according to LRH Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera.
Dr. Perera attributed the surge in cases to the prevailing rainy weather conditions and the multitude of gatherings taking place. He emphasized that the number of influenza-positive cases and upper respiratory infections has notably increased during this period.
"With the current school holidays, there is a spike in diarrhoea-infected patients. Children engaging in trips and family outings are susceptible to unhygienic food and water, leading to an escalation in cases related to diarrhoea and vomiting," explained Dr. Perera.
In response to the heightened risk, Dr. Perera advised individuals exhibiting symptoms related to influenza, COVID, or other infections to wear masks and avoid close contact with others.
He further urged the public to adhere to health recommendations issued by the Health Ministry, especially for those diagnosed with COVID, in order to curb the spread of infections and protect public health. As the community navigates through these health challenges, vigilance and adherence to preventive measures are crucial for the well-being of all residents.
