The Chief Custodian of the Kataragama Devalaya, Somipala T. Ratnayake, has been arrested as the primary suspect in the mysterious disappearance of a gold tray adorned with 38 gold sovereigns.
The tray, a donation from a devout worshipper, has been a cherished possession of the Kataragama Devalaya.
Ratnayake surrendered to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) earlier today, culminating in his arrest.
This arrest follows the recent apprehension of a lay custodian of the Kataragama Devale, known colloquially as 'Chooti Kapuwa,' in connection with the same missing gold tray. 'Chooti Kapuwa' was subsequently released on bail by the Colombo Crime Division.
