The proposed bill for reforms in the electricity sector has been given the go-ahead by the Cabinet of Ministers, as announced by Power & Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera during a meeting on Monday (Nov. 20).
In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), the lawmaker stated that the new Bill would soon be published in the government gazette and subsequently presented to parliament for approval.
Once approved, the new Electricity Act will facilitate the separation of services provided by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the restructuring of the state-owned utility.
Furthermore, the new legislation aims to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of the CEB, according to Wijesekera.
