A 32-year-old individual was apprehended by Sri Lanka Customs officers at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake on Thursday morning while attempting to smuggle nearly 6.5 kilograms of gold in gel form into the country.
The suspect is a resident of Kompannavidiya
The arrest took place after the suspect arrived from Dubai at 01:40 a.m. Customs officers boarded the flight based on prior intelligence and subsequently detained the suspect and his luggage.
Inside the suspect's luggage, 16 capsules containing a total of 6 kilograms and 423 grams of gold in gel form were discovered.
The estimated value of the gold is approximately Rs. 110 million. The seized gold has been sent to the Government Analyst for further examination, and investigations are underway to obtain a report on the suspect's mobile phone call logs. The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Negombo Magistrate's Court pending the receipt of reports by the Sri Lanka Customs officers at BIA.
