In an effort to alleviate the financial burden on government employees, President Ranil Wickremesinghe suggested a notable increase of Rs. 10,000 in the Cost of Living Allowance during his budget presentation to Parliament.

If approved, this adjustment would raise the allowance to Rs. 17,800. To ensure a smooth transition, the salary adjustment is planned to be implemented from April 2024.

Besides, the arrears of the cost of living from January to April will be collected in installments, starting from October of the same year.

This proposed increase in the Cost of Living Allowance aims to provide relief to government employees and help them cope with rising expenses.
