A 131 girls, all below the age of 16, fell victim to sexual assaults in October in Sri Lanka, the Police Children and Women’s Bureau said.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Renuka Jayasundara, during a media briefing expressed deep concern over the reported cases. Even more distressing is the revelation that 10 of the victims are currently pregnant.
In September, State Minister of Women and Child Affairs Geetha Kumarasinghe disclosed that 168 girls under 16 experienced sexual abuse that month, with 22 resulting in child pregnancies. This underscores the urgent need for effective measures to address this grave issue.
