During a parliamentary session, Opposition MP Wimal Weerawansa raised concerns over the legality of the IGP's service extension, stating that the Constitutional Council had not approved it. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardane countered by asserting the President's constitutional authority to nominate an IGP and mentioned the ongoing approval process by the Constitutional Council.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa highlighted that the Constitutional Council had previously approved the IGP's service extension twice but had not yet approved the third extension, suggesting the appointment of a new IGP might be more appropriate.
TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran also expressed concerns about the absence of a constitutionally appointed IGP and called it an intentional violation by the President, potentially constituting an impeachable offense.
