A 21-year-old soldier has been arrested by a team of officers from the Police Children and Women Bureau on charges of threatening to release explicit photographs of a 16-year-old girl and her 13-year-old sister on social media.
According to the police, the suspect had initiated a romantic relationship with the 16-year-old schoolgirl, whom he had connected with on Facebook.
The situation escalated when the suspect acquired nude images of both the 16-year-old and her younger sister via WhatsApp. He then used these images to blackmail the girl, threatening to share them on the internet unless she paid a sum of money.
As a result, he coerced the elder sister into depositing 50,000 rupees into a bank account. The arrested soldier, who resides in Kuliapitiya and is known to serve at an army camp in the north.
Police said the 16-year-old schoolgirl had formed a connection with the soldier through his Facebook profile, the two had never met in person.
