The Chinese research vessel Shi Yan 6 has commenced its marine research activities along the western coast of Sri Lanka, starting today.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the Sri Lankan government has issued a 48-hour research permit to the Chinese vessel, with stringent supervision in place to monitor its operations.
The Sri Lanka Navy will play a pivotal role in overseeing and regulating the activities of the research vessel throughout its stay in Sri Lankan waters.
It's worth noting that this decision has been made, despite lingering concerns voiced by Indian authorities over the past few months. Some Indian officials have expressed apprehension that the Chinese vessel might be engaged in espionage activities aimed at monitoring Indian operations.
