Sri Lanka has tragically witnessed the loss of at least 115 children in road accidents during the the period from January 1 to October 15 of this year, police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manoj Ranagala, who oversees the Traffic Police Division said that the reckless driving behavior of motorists as a significant factor contributing to these devastating incidents.
SSP Ranagala said at a media briefing in Colombo that Sri Lanka has experienced a total of 1,790 motor accidents during this mentioned time frame.
Last year, the annual death toll from road accidents in the country reached 2,539.
The SSP emphasized that a significant portion of these casualties were young individuals, highlighting that many of these accidents involved motorcycles.
He urged parents to take responsibility for their children's safety by ensuring that they wear protective helmets while traveling with them on motorcycles.
