The current restrictions on imported goods, with the exception of vehicles, will be lifted in October, Finance State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said.
Speaking at a conference in Anuradhapura, Semasinghe stated that import restrictions are currently imposed on 600 HS codes (Harmonized System codes).
"We will be able to remove import restrictions on all these items, except for 270 HS codes related to vehicles, by October," he said.
Semasinghe explained that this decision is aimed at stabilizing prices. The current restrictions have led to price increases for certain goods due to insufficient supply to meet demand.
On August 14, the government issued a special gazette notification, easing restrictions on the importation of public transport buses and special-purpose heavy vehicles such as tankers, bowsers, and fire trucks.
Moreover, the government has decided to release heavy vehicles that were imported during the restricted period and are still awaiting clearance at ports.
