The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory warning of a high possibility of severe lightning in the North Central Province and the districts of Trincomalee and Batticaloa this evening or tonight (October 26).
The department said thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning were likely to occur at several locations in these areas.
Temporarily strong winds could also occur in the affected areas during thundershowers, the department warned, urging the public to take necessary precautions to minimise lightning-related accidents.
The public has been advised to follow safety measures during thunderstorms.
People should avoid staying outdoors or under trees and seek shelter inside a safe building or an enclosed vehicle.
They should also avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, sports grounds and reservoirs.
The department has further advised the public to refrain from using corded telephones and electrical appliances connected to the power supply during thunderstorms.
The use of open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats should also be avoided.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant as strong winds could cause trees and power lines to fall.
In an emergency, people are advised to seek assistance from local disaster management officers.
