The Department of Irrigation has announced plans to open 16 spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir to release more than 15,000 cubic feet of water per second into the Kala Oya.
The measure was taken as of noon today (26) to manage the inflow of water into the reservoir.
The department said the number of spill gates opened could change depending on rainfall in the reservoir's catchment areas and the volume of water flowing into the reservoir.
Residents living downstream of the Rajanganaya Reservoir, particularly in areas surrounding the Kala Oya river basin, have been advised to remain vigilant about changes in water levels and follow instructions issued by the Department of Irrigation and disaster management authorities.
Meanwhile, four spill gates of the Tabbowa Reservoir, located in the Mee Oya river basin, have also been opened by one foot each.
The measure was taken as of noon today to regulate the inflow of water into the reservoir. Accordingly, approximately 880 cubic feet of water per second is being released into the Mee Oya, the Department of Irrigation said.
Residents living downstream of the Tabbowa Reservoir and along both banks of the Mee Oya have also been urged to remain alert to changes in river water levels and follow advisories issued by the relevant authorities.
