The US Navy warship USS Canberra (LCS 30) arrived at the Port of Colombo today (October 26) for its second visit to Sri Lanka this year as part of a routine port call.
According to a statement issued by the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship previously visited Colombo in June 2026.
The Embassy said the visit highlights the longstanding partnership between the US and Sri Lankan navies and their shared commitment to strengthening maritime security across the Indo-Pacific region.
US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Eric Meyer expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Sri Lanka Navy, noting that its professionalism helps ensure smooth and efficient port visits.
“Each visit reinforces the strength of our naval partnership, built on trust, and our shared commitment to maintaining security and stability across the Indian Ocean,” Meyer said.
Built in Mobile, Alabama, USS Canberra is designed to operate in both coastal waters and the open ocean. The vessel is equipped with advanced technology and adaptable mission systems, enabling it to conduct maritime security operations, counter sea mines and support US naval operations in the Indo-Pacific.
The ship was named in honour of HMAS Canberra, an Australian warship that was lost during the Battle of Savo Island in 1942 while fighting alongside US forces during World War II.
USS Canberra made history on July 22, 2023, when it became the first US Navy warship to be commissioned in an allied country. The commissioning ceremony took place at the Royal Australian Navy’s Fleet Base East in Sydney, Australia.
