Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake says efforts are underway to restore electricity across Sri Lanka following an islandwide power outage this morning (17).

The Minister said electricity had already been restored in several areas, with power expected to be restored in other areas in stages as quickly as possible.

He stated that the exact cause of the outage has not yet been identified, adding that investigations are underway to determine what triggered the failure.

Investigations are focusing, among other possibilities, on whether an operational failure at a power plant in Kotmale yesterday (16) may have contributed to an imbalance in the electricity system.

The Minister also urged consumers with rooftop solar power systems to switch them off temporarily to assist authorities in restoring the national electricity grid.

“As the national system operator, we are currently working to restore the system. We anticipate that we will be able to restore the power supply in stages very soon,” he said.

He added that restoring electricity across the country as quickly as possible remains the authorities’ immediate priority.
