Electricity supply has been restored in several areas of Colombo, Gampaha, Galle and Badulla districts following an islandwide power outage reported at around 11.45 a.m. today (17), the National System Operator (NSO) said.

According to the NSO, the outage was caused by instability in the transmission network, resulting in a total failure of the country's power grid.

The NSO said restoration work is currently underway and requested owners of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to disconnect their systems until further notice to support the restoration process.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake said that all power-generating stations, except the Samanalawewa and New Laxapana power stations, had shut down. The affected facilities included the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai.
