Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has strongly condemned the alleged repressive measures taken against Buddhist monks who travelled on foot from Kandy to Colombo and are staging a peaceful protest near the Presidential Secretariat.

In a special statement issued to the media, Premadasa said that even a temporary shelter erected to protect a Buddha statue brought by the monks had been dismantled.

He further stated that he had received reports that individuals had been arrested while actions were being taken in a manner that caused distress to the monks participating in the protest.

Highlighting the alleged harassment and suffering caused to the Maha Sangha, the Opposition Leader urged the President to intervene immediately and take action to address the situation.
