A Buddhist monk has the full right to wear robes when being taken outside prison, and that right remains in force until the relevant Buddhist chapter instructs otherwise, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara has stated.
The Minister made these remarks during a special statement to the media regarding the report of a special committee appointed to update the rules and standing orders formulated under the Prisons Ordinance.
He further stated that the committee had proposed amending Standing Order No. 356 by introducing No. 356(a), along with an interim directive to amend Departmental Order No. 550.
Accordingly, instructions have been issued to the Acting Commissioner General of Prisons to amend the prison standing orders in line with the committee’s recommendations, the Minister added.
