The wearing of seat belts will be made mandatory for all passengers travelling in the front and rear seats of vehicles using Sri Lanka’s expressways, effective from midnight today (18).
Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake officially announced the new requirement.
The Minister said the Government had previously granted grace periods on four occasions through Gazette notifications to allow owners of older vehicles that were not originally fitted with seat belts to install the necessary safety equipment.
As the final grace period ends today, only vehicles fitted with seat belts will be legally permitted to enter and travel on expressways after midnight, the Minister emphasized.
