Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga has revealed plans to retire from competitive athletics after the 2036 Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in India.
Speaking at a public event, Tharanga said his immediate focus is on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where he aims to set a new Olympic record in the men’s javelin throw.
He said he hopes to surpass the Olympic record of 92.97 metres set by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Tharanga has identified the 2028 Games as a major target in his career, with the longer-term goal of competing at the 2032 and 2036 Olympics before bringing his international career to an end.
