The principal of Dambulla National School was killed in a road accident involving a bus and two cars in the Pelwehera area along the Dambulla–Habarana main road early today (18), police said.
The deceased was identified as 38-year-old Janaka Wijesinghe, the principal of Dambulla National School and a father of two.
According to Dambulla Police, a luxury bus travelling from Trincomalee to Colombo had lost control and crossed into the opposite lane before colliding head-on with the principal’s car, which was travelling from Dambulla towards Habarana.
The impact caused the car to veer off the road. The bus then continued for some distance before crashing into another parked car and subsequently into a restaurant.
The principal remained trapped inside his vehicle for around 45 minutes, while residents made strenuous efforts to rescue him.
He was in critical condition when he was taken to Dambulla Base Hospital but was pronounced dead upon admission, the Dambulla Headquarters Police Inspector said.
Two passengers travelling on the bus were also injured in the accident.
