Plans are underway to reduce the number of subjects offered at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) examination to seven, including History and an Aesthetic subject, the Sub-Committee on Education Reforms has revealed.
The matter was discussed at a recent meeting of the sub-committee chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
The committee also discussed plans to introduce new modules on social harmony, law and ethics for students in Grades 12 and 13.
The meeting focused on the progress of general and pre-school education reforms scheduled to be implemented from 2027.
As part of the initial phase of the general education reforms, activity books, teacher guides and modules have already been prepared for Grades 2 and 6, while teacher training programmes are currently underway.
The Department of Parliament Communications said awareness programmes on the proposed education reforms will also be conducted in the near future.
Meanwhile, a National Pre-School Education Policy has been formulated as part of efforts to formalise pre-school education. Measures are also underway to register pre-schools, develop curricula and teacher guides, and conduct specialised teacher training programmes.
