A flash flood has been reported in a Divisional Secretariat area in the Kandy District due to heavy rainfall, according to Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Director Pradeep Kodippili.
He said 25 people from eight families have been affected by the incident and are currently being housed temporarily at Bawwagama Vidyalaya in Nawalapitiya.
Relief measures are already underway for the displaced families, he added.
The highest rainfall recorded during the past few hours was 119 mm in Wallalawita in the Kalutara District.
Rainfall between 50 mm and 119 mm was also recorded in Hanwella, Elpitiya, Neluwa, Dunhinda, Wathuruwila and Naula.
Kodippili said the DMC is prepared to respond to both the dry weather affecting several parts of the country and the heavy rainfall experienced in other areas.
He urged the public to closely follow weather alerts issued by the Department of Meteorology and advised people living in mountainous areas to remain alert for early warning signs of landslides.
The public has also been requested to report any disaster situation to the DMC's emergency hotline, 117.
Meanwhile, Kodippili said 161,451 people from 49,344 families across eight districts have been affected by the impact of El Niño-related weather conditions.
Continuous drinking water distribution programmes are being carried out for affected communities.
Accordingly, drinking water is currently being distributed to 141,312 people from 43,221 families living in 36 Divisional Secretariat areas.
The districts facing drinking water shortages are Ampara, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Batticaloa, Matale, Moneragala, Polonnaruwa and Ratnapura.
Mr. Kodippili further said the Department of Meteorology has reported unsettled atmospheric conditions in the lower atmosphere near Sri Lanka.
