The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory warning of strong winds and rough seas for the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
The advisory was issued at 11.00 a.m. today (12) and will remain valid until 11.00 a.m. tomorrow (13).
Wind speeds in the sea areas off the coast from Hambantota to Pottuvil are expected to occasionally increase to 50–60 kmph, while the seas are likely to become rough at times.
Meanwhile, wave heights in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Galle, Matara and Hambantota, up to Pottuvil, could rise to around 2.0–3.0 metres. The Department clarified that this refers to wave height at sea and not the height of waves reaching the shore.
There is also a possibility of waves reaching the shore in coastal areas from Beruwala to Galle and Matara.
The Department of Meteorology has urged fishing and naval communities operating in the affected sea areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
