Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesha Tharanga, currently ranked No. 1 in the world, has been selected to compete at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
World Athletics announced the list of athletes selected for the championship. The three-day event is scheduled to begin on September 11 and continue until September 13.
Athletes who are current Olympic, World Championship and Diamond League champions in their respective events receive direct qualification, while other competitors qualify based on the Ultimate Championship rankings. Special invitations from the organisers also provide additional qualification opportunities.
The championship features 13 events, comprising eight track and five field events, with competitions for both men and women. Two mixed relay events the 4x100m and 4x400m will also be held.
A total of 381 athletes representing 65 athletics federations are expected to compete.
The men’s javelin throw, in which Tharanga will compete, is scheduled for September 13. Seven athletes have qualified for the event, including Tharanga, 2024 Paris Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem and 2025 Tokyo World Championship winner Keshorn Walcott.
