Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala says around 70% of inmates currently held in prisons are facing charges related to drug offences.

The Minister said approximately 40,000 inmates are currently in prison in connection with drug-related offences, highlighting the scale of the country’s drug problem.

He also warned that drug pills have spread beyond schools in Colombo and are now reaching schools in rural areas as well.

Minister Wijepala said a special programme has been launched to prevent the spread of drugs in schools and to protect students from drug-related activities.

He made these remarks while attending an event held at Kobeigane National School.
