President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the Government will not reverse the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution under any circumstances.
Addressing a public rally in Bulathsinhala today, the President said the Government would proceed with the proposed constitutional amendment once the Supreme Court delivers its determination on petitions filed against the Bill.
He said the Government would present the Bill to Parliament immediately after receiving the court’s determination and take steps to expedite the legislative process.
President Dissanayake said the proposed constitutional and legal reforms were aimed at addressing corruption and dismantling structures that had enabled the misuse of political power.
He claimed that individuals who had benefited from what he described as the “black state” were now attempting to oppose the Government’s reforms and seeking support from foreign missions and international organisations.
The President said the Government would remain firm on decisions taken in the public interest despite political opposition and other forms of pressure.
He reiterated that the proposed 22nd Amendment was part of the Government’s broader programme to strengthen governance, address corruption and ensure that those responsible for wrongdoing face the law.
