Sri Lanka and India are expected to sign three defence-related Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Sri Lanka, which begins on Tuesday.
The agreements will cover several areas of defence cooperation between the two countries. One of the MoUs will focus on the supply of Indian air-defence guns, while the other two will aim to strengthen ties between the armed forces of Sri Lanka and India.
The two countries are also expected to review the India-Sri Lanka Defence Cooperation MoU signed during President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to India in April last year.
During his visit, Singh is scheduled to meet President Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. He is also expected to visit Parliament and observe parliamentary proceedings.
Meanwhile, Singh is expected to review the progress of India-funded projects in Sri Lanka, including projects carried out with approximately USD 450 million in Indian funding.
The visit is expected to further strengthen defence and bilateral cooperation between Sri Lanka and India.
