The National People’s Power (NPP) government is set to mark two years in office with a series of islandwide public rallies, beginning in the Kalutara District, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expected to lead the opening events.
The campaign, held under the theme “Our Government – Two Years: Good for the Nation,” is intended to highlight what the administration describes as its achievements since taking office, particularly in economic stabilisation, anti-corruption efforts and strengthening public confidence in state institutions.
Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has said the government successfully helped steer Sri Lanka away from the severe economic crisis and bankruptcy conditions that followed the 2022 financial collapse. He also pointed to measures against corruption and the illegal drug trade as key areas in which the administration believes it has made progress.
According to the schedule outlined for the campaign, the first major gathering is being held at the Beruwala Beach Grounds in Kalutara, with further meetings planned in districts including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Matara and Gampaha during September.
The anniversary comes as the government seeks to reinforce its political message ahead of the next phase of its administration. Supporters point to economic recovery, fiscal discipline and investigations into alleged corruption under previous governments as evidence of progress. Independent commentary, however, has also highlighted continuing concerns over the cost of living and the pace of structural reforms.
The political environment surrounding the anniversary remains contested. Opposition parties have recently staged protests over the government's proposed judicial reforms, accusing the administration of threatening judicial independence. The government rejects those allegations and says the reforms are intended to address court delays and improve judicial efficiency.
