Sri Lanka’s highly anticipated electric railway project is set to begin construction by mid-next year, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of the country’s public transport network.
Transport, Highways, and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayaka said that initial infrastructure development will commence between May and June, with the first phase targeted for completion by 2030. The initiative aims to shift the nation away from its historical dependence on fossil fuels, introducing a high-speed, eco-friendly transit system designed to significantly reduce traffic congestion across the commercial capital.
The first phase of the electrification project will focus on three major high-traffic commuter corridors connecting Colombo to the suburbs. These vital routes include the Main Line extending from Colombo Fort to Ragama, the Coastal Line from Colombo Fort to Panadura, and the Kelani Valley Line from Maradana to Makumbura. By implementing standard gauge technology and advanced operational systems, the new network is expected to drastically cut down travel times, allowing commuters to reach central Colombo from suburban hubs in a fraction of the current commute time.
Alongside the railway tracks and overhead electrification, the project will feature a comprehensive upgrade of passenger infrastructure. Minister Rathnayaka emphasized that the newly constructed railway stations will transcend traditional ticket-issuing booths by offering modern conveniences and enhanced facilities designed to meet international transport standards. The government also plans to operate these electric train services in parallel with the existing railway system, ensuring uninterrupted commuter service while the current infrastructure undergoes rehabilitation.
Addressing the broader economic vision, Minister Rathnayaka called upon the local business community to collaborate with the government in driving the country toward its developmental goals. He noted that the administration has laid a disciplined foundation for large-scale public property initiatives and infrastructure projects. Further details regarding the project's financial framework and the broader national transport strategy are expected to be unveiled during the upcoming National Budget presentation scheduled for November 12.
