The “Police Cycle Race,” organized to mark the 160th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police, commenced today (01) at 7.30 a.m. from near the Police Headquarters in Kompannavidiya, Colombo.
Organized for the first time in the history of the Sri Lanka Police under the guidance and direction of the Inspector General of Police, the race consists of three stages covering a total distance of 410 kilometres.
The event aims to promote a healthy, drug-free youth population while strengthening trust, mutual understanding and relationships between the Sri Lanka Police and the country’s youth. It also seeks to encourage young people to engage positively with society and contribute to maintaining law and order.
The race, held for the Inspector General of Police Challenge Trophy, covers 141 kilometres in its first stage today, from the Kompannavidiya Police Headquarters through Peliyagoda, Nittambuwa, Warakapola, Kurunegala and Melsiripura to Dambulla.
The second stage will commence tomorrow (02) from Dambulla and cover 137.4 kilometres, ending in Puttalam via Maradankadawala, Thirappane, Anuradhapura, Nochchiyagama and Kala Oya.
The final stage will be held on Wednesday (03), which coincides with Police Day. The 132-kilometre stage will begin in Puttalam and finish at the Police Field Force Headquarters in Bambalapitiya, passing through Chilaw, Marawila, Negombo, Ja-Ela, Peliyagoda, Orugodawatta, Dematagoda, Borella and the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.
The overall winner will receive the Inspector General of Police Challenge Trophy along with a cash prize of Rs. 300,000. The second and third places will receive Rs. 200,000 and Rs. 175,000, respectively.
Cash prizes ranging from Rs. 150,000 to Rs. 10,000 will also be awarded to competitors finishing in fourth to 25th places, while all cyclists who complete the race will receive prizes.
Additional awards will be presented to the Sprint Champion, Best Young Rider (under 23), Stage Champion, King of the Mountains and Young Rider at each stage.
