Sri Lankan authorities are continuing a series of investigations into alleged drug trafficking, illegal assets and organised criminal activity linked to suspected drug trafficker Shiran Basik, who was recently brought back to Sri Lanka from the United Arab Emirates.

Basik, 48, was arrested in Dubai and deported to Sri Lanka on August 14. He was subsequently handed over to the Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Bureau for further questioning. Police have obtained court approval to detain and question him as investigations continue.

Several police units are investigating allegations involving Basik, including drug trafficking, firearms and weapons-related offences, as well as assets allegedly acquired through organised criminal activities. Investigators are also examining properties and financial interests allegedly connected to him, both in Sri Lanka and overseas.

Authorities are also looking into information reportedly provided during Basik’s questioning. Police have said they are examining possible links between him and various individuals and organisations, while separate investigations are being conducted into people and assets allegedly connected to his network.

The Illegal Assets and Properties Investigation Division is also reportedly examining the assets of a tuition teacher alleged to have connections with Basik. According to the information presented in the video report, the teacher is currently in Thailand after reportedly attempting to travel to New Zealand. His wife is also said to have left Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, reports of alleged financial dealings involving public figures, including models and politicians, have also surfaced in connection with the wider investigations.

In a separate development, Sri Lankan authorities are also pursuing information concerning underworld figure Kaviska Madushan Abeywickrama, alias “Wanathe Chatu,” who was reportedly arrested in Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. Authorities are working with foreign counterparts regarding the suspect and efforts to bring him back to Sri Lanka are reportedly underway.
