The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is set to hold a special general meeting today (29) to deliberate on the government's proposed increase in the retirement age of judges and determine the association's response to the move.
The meeting is scheduled to commence at 11.00 a.m. at the BASL premises in Colombo, with members of the association invited to participate in discussions on what it describes as an issue of national importance.
BASL President, Attorney-at-Law Rajeev Amarasuriya, said the meeting will focus on the implications of the proposed amendment and the measures the association should take in response.
He stressed that the matter is not directed at any individual judge but concerns the broader principles of judicial independence, constitutional governance, and preserving public confidence in the justice system.
Mr. Amarasuriya further emphasised that any significant constitutional reforms, including changes affecting the judiciary, should be introduced through a transparent process with extensive public and stakeholder consultation.
The outcome of the special general meeting is expected to shape the BASL's official position on the proposed amendment and its future course of action regarding the issue.
