The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has announced the immediate suspension of the Homagama Headquarters Police Inspector over alleged failure to properly supervise officers and neglect of duty in connection with the death of a suspect in police custody.
The suspect, identified as P.D. Ishara Harsha Kumara, was arrested on October 25 by a team of officers from the Homagama Police Station on suspicion of possessing 490 milligrams of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘Ice’.
The suspect subsequently died while in police custody.
Investigations into the incident have revealed serious lapses in duty by the Headquarters Police Inspector, leading to the decision to suspend him with immediate effect.
The allegations include failing to properly monitor the suspect while he was being held in a police cell, failing to provide appropriate instructions to investigating officers on the next steps, and failing to adequately check the suspect’s condition.
He has also been accused of failing to properly supervise the process by which records relating to the suspect’s arrest were prepared and maintained.
