The Cabinet has approved a proposal to extend the retirement age of judges by two years.

The controversial proposal has faced opposition from senior members of the legal fraternity, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and opposition political parties.

The proposal will now be presented to Parliament for approval.

As the proposed change requires an amendment to the Constitution, it must receive a two-thirds majority in Parliament. The Government currently holds the required majority to pass the proposed amendment.
