The funeral of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne will be held this afternoon (20) at the Borella General Cemetery with full police honours.
Mr.Wickramaratne, who served as Sri Lanka's 35th Inspector General of Police, passed away at the age of 63.
He joined the Sri Lanka Police in 1986 and was appointed Acting IGP in 2019 following the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, after then-IGP Pujith Jayasundara was suspended from duty.
On November 27, 2020, Wickramaratne was officially appointed as the Inspector General of Police.
Although he was due to retire on March 25, 2023, his tenure was extended several times by then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe until a new IGP was appointed. As a result, he continued to serve for nearly eight additional months before retiring on November 23, 2023.
Mr. Wickramaratne died last Friday after sustaining a gunshot wound.
Police suspect that the incident was a case of suicide and believe he used the firearm of his security officer to inflict the fatal gunshot. However, the post-mortem examination concluded with an open verdict, meaning the exact cause and circumstances of his death have not been judicially determined.
