More than seven months after Cyclone Ditwah devastated parts of the country, families in Ulpathagama, Kandaketiya, continue to live without permanent shelter, with many still awaiting assistance to rebuild their homes.
The cyclone, which struck Sri Lanka in November last year, caused extensive damage to lives, homes and public infrastructure across several areas.
Residents say that despite the passage of several months, many affected families have yet to receive sufficient support to reconstruct their houses and resume normal life.
According to villagers, 27 families in Ulpathagama lost their homes entirely as a result of the cyclone, while numerous other houses sustained partial damage.
The affected residents claim that assistance for rebuilding has been inadequate, even after nearly eight months since the disaster.
They also stated that the 27 families whose homes were completely destroyed were recently called to the Kandaketiya Divisional Secretariat, where authorities initiated a lottery process to allocate land for their resettlement.
