Speaking at the ceremony, the Director General of the Department of National Zoological Gardens announced plans to further digitalize the zoo's services, including the introduction of an online ticketing system and other digital initiatives to enhance visitor convenience.
The Dehiwala National Zoo was officially established on July 3, 1936. Spread across 23 acres, it is home to a diverse collection of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and aquatic species, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience wildlife from around the world.
Beyond recreation, the zoo serves as a national center dedicated to animal welfare, scientific research, conservation breeding, and environmental education, playing a significant role in wildlife conservation and public awareness.
Among its most popular attractions are the aquarium, butterfly garden, and elephant performances, which continue to draw large numbers of visitors.
The anniversary event was attended by Additional Secretary (Administration) of the Ministry of Environment H.M.B.P. Herath, Deputy Director of the Department of National Zoological Gardens Hemantha Samarasekara, Director of Operations Anoma Priyadarshani, and several other officials.
During the celebration, prizes were awarded to the winners of the naming competition for two lion cubs born at the zoo. The female cub was named Zora, while the male cub was given the name Cairo.
