Sri Lankan mountaineer Johann Peries has successfully summited Mount Denali, North America's highest peak, marking a major milestone in his long-standing quest to complete the prestigious Seven Summits challenge.

Peries reached the 6,190-metre summit at 7:35 p.m. on June 17, 2026, succeeding on his third attempt after years of setbacks, injuries, and two unsuccessful expeditions.

Widely regarded as one of the world's most demanding high-altitude climbs, Denali is known for its extreme weather, technical terrain, and harsh conditions. The 2026 climbing season has been described as one of the most challenging in recent years, adding further significance to Peries' achievement.

According to expedition tracking data compiled by renowned mountain historian Alan Arnette, Denali typically attracts between 1,000 and 1,100 climbers each year, with summit success heavily dependent on weather conditions and climbers' endurance.

Peries' successful ascent represents another landmark in Sri Lankan mountaineering history. He is the first and only Sri Lankan to undertake the Seven Summits challenge—an ambitious mission to climb the highest mountain on each of the world's seven continents.

Having dedicated more than a decade to pursuing the goal, Peries' Denali summit stands as a testament to resilience, determination, and perseverance in the face of repeated challenges.

The achievement brings him one step closer to completing the Seven Summits challenge, further cementing his place as one of Sri Lanka's most accomplished adventurers and inspiring a new generation of mountaineers.
