Former Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, widely known as Pillayan, has been remanded until July 13 after being produced before the Batticaloa Magistrate’s Court today (30).

The order was issued when the court took up a case concerning the investigation into five murders reported in several parts of the Eastern Province.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had earlier submitted a progress report to the court on June 15, outlining developments in its investigations into a series of alleged killings that occurred in 2008.

The case relates to multiple incidents, including the fatal shooting of two individuals near a playground adjoining the Murugan Temple on January 9, 2008, using a T-56 assault rifle, the killing of two others along the Kattankudy main road on May 22, 2008, and the shooting death of Alagathurai Dharmalingam, a resident of Koththiyapola in the Vavunathivu Police Division, who was allegedly killed by an unidentified armed group.

Pillayan has been named as the third suspect in the case. The Magistrate ordered that he remain in remand custody and be produced before court when the case is taken up again on July 13.
