Motorists caught driving recklessly will be produced directly before courts instead of being issued on-the-spot traffic fines, under new instructions issued to all Police traffic officers, Deputy Inspector General of Police for Traffic Control and Road Safety W.P.J. Senadheera said.

The directive has been introduced in response to the alarming increase in road fatalities reported across the country this year.

According to Police, 1,292 fatal road accidents were recorded between January 1 and June 26, resulting in 1,357 deaths. During the same period, 2,512 serious injury accidents and 5,059 minor road accidents were also reported.

Among those who lost their lives were 467 pedestrians and 465 motorcyclists, highlighting the vulnerability of road users.

DIG Senadheera said excessive speed and reckless driving continue to be the leading causes of fatal road accidents, adding that the tougher enforcement measures are aimed at improving road discipline and reducing the number of deaths on Sri Lanka's roads.
