The event focused on advancing scientific research, disease prevention, and promoting accessible oral healthcare services across Sri Lanka.
During the ceremony, the Prime Minister presented gold medals and awards to outstanding dental students, researchers, and scholarship recipients. She noted that their achievements reflect the commitment of Sri Lanka's educational institutions to nurturing innovative healthcare professionals.
Commending the Sri Lanka Dental Association for its more than nine decades of service, Dr. Amarasuriya praised the association's longstanding contribution to advancing professional standards and promoting scientific knowledge in dentistry.
She stressed that public health extends beyond hospitals, emphasizing that good health begins with preventive care and healthy lifestyles.
"Oral health is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. A healthy smile is not simply about having strong teeth—it is closely linked to proper nutrition, a child's ability to learn, an adult's productivity, and the overall well-being and dignity of every individual," the Prime Minister said.
Highlighting the global burden of oral diseases, Dr. Amarasuriya noted that nearly 3.5 billion people worldwide suffer from oral health conditions. In Sri Lanka, she identified childhood dental diseases, gum disease among adults, tobacco use, and oral cancer as major public health challenges.
Reaffirming the government's commitment to reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases and strengthening the country's healthcare system, she said successful initiatives, including school dental health services and community-based health programmes, would continue to be expanded.
The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of adopting modern technologies, strengthening local research capabilities, and adapting international best practices to meet Sri Lanka's healthcare needs.
She further acknowledged the growing contribution of women in the dental profession, emphasizing the need to ensure equal opportunities in specialist training, research, leadership, and decision-making.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni, Sri Lanka Dental Association President Dr. Ananda Ratnayake, dental professionals, researchers, academics, and other distinguished guests.
