The new systems will be installed near electricity transmission substations in Panadura, Beliatta, Hambantota, Ampara, Vavunathivu, Valachchenai and Mahiyanganaya. Together, the seven units have a storage capacity of 280MW and are expected to supply up to 70MW of electricity to the national grid during peak demand periods.
The systems will be installed by WindForce PLC, which was selected through an international competitive bidding process. The company is also installing similar battery storage systems at six other locations across the country.
The latest shipment follows the arrival of eight BESS units earlier this month. Those systems are currently being installed near selected grid substations and are expected to be commissioned by the end of July, contributing an initial 80MW to the national grid.
Maintenance of the battery storage systems will be carried out by the respective suppliers, while their operation and overall management will be handled by National System Operator Ltd (NSO) under the Ministry of Energy.
