Prior to the appointment, Bishop Pillainayagam served as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Colombo and the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Batticaloa.
The appointment was officially announced by the Vatican, confirming that Bishop Pillainayagam will now assume responsibility for leading the Diocese of Jaffna.
