Rainy conditions are expected to temporarily intensify across the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka from tonight (June 25) and continue over the next few days, according to the latest weather forecast.

Several spells of showers are forecast in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at isolated locations in Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2:00 p.m.

Meteorologists also warn of fairly strong winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Southern provinces, along with Trincomalee District.

Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers to minimize potential damage and ensure safety.

Marine Weather Warning

Weather conditions at sea are also expected to remain unsettled during the next 24 hours.

Showers or thundershowers are likely at several locations in the sea areas off the coast stretching from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Winds will be predominantly south-westerly, with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 km/h.

Stronger winds of 50–60 km/h may occur at times in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

As a result, sea conditions in these regions are expected to be rough at times, while other sea areas around the island may experience fairly rough conditions. Mariners and fishing communities are advised to exercise caution, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can develop during thundershower activity.

Officials continue to monitor the evolving weather situation and recommend that residents and seafarers stay informed through official forecasts and advisories.
